  • Detail of a relief on the exterior of the National Insurance of Egypt Building, An-Nabi Danial Street, Alexandria. Just what a bare-breasted 1930s-style Cleopatra has to do with the staid business of insurance is anyone's guess.
  • As far as I could determine this is the only Art Deco building in central Aswan. And yes, I did go looking.
  • Ades Building, downtown Cairo. There are numerous Art Deco-era buildings of this scale and type throughout the downtown areas of both Cairo and Alexandria. They may be run-down, but at least they haven't fallen victim to the wrecker's ball.

  • A little bit of Florida in downtown Cairo; the Cinema Miami, like most of Egypt's movie houses, is a functioning relic of the Art Deco period. It's nice to know that soulless multiplexes haven't yet taken over the entire world.
